Bill Stinnett, Ph.D. (L.E.T. Master Trainer) and Linda Adams (President of GTI) discuss how Leader Effectiveness Training developed from Dr. Thomas Gordon’s book, Group Centered Leadership, in the 1950’s. At the time, the concepts that the book presented challenged the status quo on how work relationships were viewed. Dr. Gordon used to recall that the book only sold a couple hundred copies—not exactly a best-seller! Active Listening, I-Messages, and Communication Roadblocks (the latter two were developed by Dr. Gordon) were all novel ideas in leadership training – suggesting that a leader should act more as an aide for other’s to solve their own problems, rather than owning their problems and trying to save the day.
